Today is an exciting day for our community

Today is an exciting day for our community, because today we begin in earnest to talk about what a new government could be like and how it could benefit every one of us no matter where we live.

I’m excited to be part of this community conversation and to be guiding the team that will conduct meetings in living rooms and kitchens all across Shelby County.  For me, this is the culmination of my work at the grassroots level for several years in our community.

That’s because several times in the midst of a project to give the public a voice on decisions taking place in City Hall or the County Courthouse, I’ve said that I wished government were simpler and more efficient.  Now we have the chance to make that happen.

I helped organize Rebuild Government because this is the most important discussion to take place in my time as a citizen here, and after all, what is more central to a democracy than people like us having a voice in what our government should look like.

I have my own ideas about how a new government could eliminate inefficiency, duplication, waste and the bureaucratic redtape that blocks economic growth.  I’m sure you have ideas of your own.

What we’re doing at Rebuild Government is making sure that there is an organized way for people to have a voice in the work of the Charter Commission and to tell Commission members what our priorities are and what we believe is needed for a new government to get our support.

At this time, Rebuild Government is not asking for anyone to be for or against anything.  All we’re asking is that each of us agrees to participate in the conversation about a new government.

The truth is that the Charter Commission starts with a blank slate, and we need our voices to be heard.  As part of our meetings across Shelby County, we will gather the opinions of our fellow citizens and report back to the Charter Commission on what they want in a new charter for a new government.

We hope you’ll join in this conversation.

You can begin by hosting a meeting and all it takes to do that is for you to contact us and let us know.  You can do this by clicking the “Take Action” button on our home page or sending us an email.
